Vancouver Chiropractor Says “Health Care is Teamwork”

May 8, 2008 by Dr. Carla Cupido

Yesterday I was fortunate enough to be a part of MEC’s NAOSH week at head office (Noth American Occupational Safety and Health). I spoke on the topic of “The Length and Strength of Muscles & How to Prevent Injury.” I discussed issues pertaining to muscular weakness, inhibition, and hypertonicity (tightness). We went through exercises as a group and I fielded many fabulous questions. I felt honoured to speak to such a keen group of individuals. You could tell that every single person in attendance placed their health as a top priority in their lives.

Why am I writing about this? I thought this the perfect example to emphasize the importance of playing an active role in your own health care. The staff at MEC understood this. They grasped the concept that if they want to either rehabilitate an injury or prevent one, they must be active in achieving this. I was the educator yesterday and the MEC staff were indviduals seeking the knowledge to learn how to care for themselves.

Yes, there is a place for health care providers, a very vital place. However, if the health care provider is doing their job properly, they will educate their patients on how they can take their health into their own hands. Health care is teamwork.

Thank you MEC for understanding your role in your health care. As a health care practitioner, it is thrilling to see people excited to learn about their bodies. Best of luck enjoying the activities you love this summer and thank you for being such a great audience. I truly enjoyed myself. Take care.
